Cavalleria Rusticana

Following on from the stunning success of CitiOpera's production of Otello, Stella Axarlis returns to direct Mascagni's masterwork, Cavalleria Rusticana. This thrilling and passionate opera has been an audience favourite since its first performance. With an intimate story of love and betrayal and some of opera's most beautiful and recognisable music, it is easy to see why.

Stella Axarlis' brand new production allows the music to take centre stage while exploring the deeply psychological love triangle at the heart of the story.

Under the baton of renowned Italian conductor, Gaetano Colajanni, the sweeping music will come to life and fill the Hawthorn Arts Centre. Featuring some of Australia's finest principal singers and CitiOpera's chorus in conjunction with Melbourne's own Southern Voice ensemble, this is a production not to be missed.

The evening will begin with a behind the scenes exploration of Cavalleria Rusticana, hosted by 3MBS's Julie Houghton. Modelled on Scottish Opera's “Unwrapped” series, audiences will be taken on an entertaining journey through the history of the opera, Mascagni's musical development, the rehearsal process, costuming and other facets of the opera.
